Welcome to 6th Grade!

I'm Amy Shaw, 6th grade ESL Literacy teacher at Webb Elementary. This is my 20th year teaching and my 5th year at Webb. I was born here in Arlington and attended Lamar High School (Go Vikes!). I received my Masters in Reading and Early Childhood Education and Bachelor's in Linguistics from UTA. My goal is to help each child grow as a reader, writer, and creative problem solver in order to be successful.

Our objectives in 6th grade literacy are increasing our comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. We will spend a lot of time reading and writing, because that is how we become better readers and writers.

Current Objectives

Reading: Read independently for at least 30 minutes

Writing: Write a personal narrative.

Word Work is due every Wednesday.

Notebooking

In our class we do Notebooking. We record our learning and respond in our notebooks. It is very important to keep your notebook updated to be successful in 6th grade. Notebooks are graded each week.

Homework

Every night you need to read and respond in your Reading Journal.

Grading

Reading Grades: Daily Reading, Notebook, Istation, Reading Responses, Group Work

Writing Grades: Word Work, Notebook, Reading Responses, Essays, Math and Science Notebooks and assignments

AVID

Webb is an AVID school. We will implement WICOR in 6th grade to help students succeed.

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
